In the past 5 years I’ve struggled with increased insomnia, depression and fatigue. In that time I’ve visited 3 doctors, one traditional, who all did blood work. They determined that one of the problems was extremely low vitamin D levels. All of them recommended 1000 – 4000 IUs of vitamin D daily. The problem was every time I took as low as 400 IUs I would have major jitters, irritability, increased insomnia and sever diarrhea. None of the three doctors could give me any reason why that was happening or how to fix the problem.
Instead of giving up I began to pray and research, which is always what I do. It didn’t take long before I came upon a website that explained the problem. You can read more about that here. Apparently, some people have problems with absorbing vitamin D, either from the sun or from supplements. This rang true for me because in the summertime I had worse sleep from increased sun exposure. The solution is quite simple. There is an increased need for magnesium in that case, so that’s what I did.
I began to try using magnesium to help absorb the vitamin D. Within weeks I was able to use the recommended dose of Vitamin D without any adverse reactions. How simple!
One thing I discovered about magnesium supplements is that they can cause a lot of gas. I tried many brands and different forms and only one doesn’t give me gas and bloating. It’s called Natural Calm by Natural Vitality. The best price is from either from Vitacost or Pure Formulas websites. They also have it with calcium, which is what I’m using now. It’s a powder that you mix with water. It’s a bit sour, but works so well that I’ll get over the flavor.
I highly recommend increasing your magnesium levels and vitamin D. You can read more about vitamin D here.
